Healthy Choices in Our Community – Year 2 Health Unit

A community health message asks people to understand or do something. This unit helps learners compare audiences, purposes, actions and evidence across fictional school, park, library and water-point examples. Students distinguish information from unsupported persuasion, design a respectful reminder and explain why usable services or adult support may matter alongside words.

Learners identify audience, purpose and action; compare community messages; investigate information and persuasion; use taught evidence; design a clear, accurate reminder; and explain practical supports and limits. Fictional school, park, library and water-point cases keep real lunches and health details private. Handwashing, water and sun-protection guidance is credited to Australian official sources. The full unaltered Australian Guide to Healthy Eating appears with source credit in Lesson 04.

Classroom use

Eight core lessons cover the complete teaching and assessment. Lessons 09–10 are optional practice in adapting a message for an audience and testing a paper reminder. All required assessment finishes in Lessons 07–08; the optional sessions add no essential criteria. Each approximately 50-minute lesson has its own complete presentation and plan.

Use whole-class modelling, safe guided practice, partner comparison and independent assessment. Case cards and a cooperative explanation game support discussion. Complete the three-message comparison and new-reminder conference within the eight core sessions.

Each learning record is immediately followed by its matching answer page with red answers and an ANSWERS (examples) name field. Open-ended examples are models, not the only correct response. Teacher case/game keys, quiz reasoning, assessment models and a four-criterion rubric support interpretation. Learners may speak, point, gesture, draw, dictate or use a communication device while demonstrating the same reasoning.
