Hairy Maclary Book Study Unit

Build narrative comprehension and response skills through a differentiated Foundation–Year 2 book study of Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy. Students identify characters, setting and story structure; sequence and retell key events; explore rhyme, rhythm and action words; infer feelings; discuss a supported story message; and plan an imaginative new adventure.

The unit combines whole-class teaching slides with low-ink worksheets, colourful games, differentiated assessment and a practical five-level rubric. Foundation–Year 1 tasks use drawing, circling, matching and short responses, while Year 2 tasks extend students into comparison, explanation, summarising and structured writing.

The original picture book is not included and must be obtained separately.
