Genre: How Stories Work - Years 3-6
Genre: How Stories Work is a complete Years 3-6 English unit that helps students recognise, compare and deliberately control literary conventions. Across a flexible five-week sequence, students investigate how plot, character, setting, language, tone and structure signal genre and shape reader expectations.
Students explore fairy tale, fantasy, mystery, adventure, humour, historical fiction and realistic fiction. They identify evidence, compare plot pathways, examine archetypes and layered characters, change mood through language and setting, blend or subvert conventions, edit for consistency and explain how their choices affect a reader.
Differentiated Years 3-4 and Years 5-6 worksheets provide accessible entry points and extension. A colour display, sorting activity and board game make genre features visible and memorable. The sequence culminates in The Locked Music Room genre-transformation assessment, supported by planning, two writing pathways, reflection and a clear five-level rubric.
