Friends, Feelings and Respect — Year 1
What could a child ask when someone is still using a pen? Does being quiet tell a group whether someone wants to join? How can a listener check an idea? Friends, Feelings and Respect gives children concrete fictional situations for noticing details, asking about wishes, comparing possible feelings and practising safe, respectful actions.
Ten separate editable lesson PowerPoints take teachers through explicit examples, rehearsal, application, feedback and reflection. The eight core lessons, each about 50 minutes, include all essential teaching and assessment. Optional lessons 9–10 revisit respectful choices and create a friendship reminder after the core learning is complete.

Learning focus
- Identify observable respectful actions such as asking, waiting, listening and agreeing a fair turn.
- Explain more than one plausible feeling using details from a situation.
- Check another person's wishes and intended message rather than relying only on silence or facial appearance.
- Offer an invitation with a real choice, including watching or declining.
- Match a repair to an action and recognise when space or trusted-adult help is needed.
- Demonstrate a suited strategy and explain its effect or limit in a new fictional case.
Classroom use
Teach core lessons 1–8 in order, using one complete numbered presentation per lesson. Use the displays and case cards for discussion, the cooperative game for rehearsal, and the worksheets for learning records. Practise the familiar interrupted-idea case before the new assessment case. Complete remaining assessment observations within core lesson 8. Use optional lessons 9–10 for extra practice and a friendship reminder activity.
Teachers can read prompts aloud and accept speech, pictures, communication devices, gestures, drawing, writing or adult-scribed responses. Offer wait time, private or puppet practice and the choice to pass. Assess the learning shown rather than communication mode, handwriting or eye contact. Use fictional cases rather than asking children to disclose or solve private relationship difficulties in front of peers.
