Students read a familiar playground plan, match features to a picture-word key and use UP to keep the representation oriented. Clear models distinguish page-fixed directions from movement relative to a facing arrow.
The lessons build from short following tasks to partner route planning and source-based repair. Students learn that turns change facing in place, BACK does not rotate the arrow, and an invalid move stops before a closed square or edge. They also test a correct route that has been wrongly criticised and ask for missing facing information instead of guessing an endpoint.

Learning focus
- Locate familiar features and explain positions using a map and key.
- Follow clear directions from a stated source, start and facing.
- Create directions a partner can use and test the result.
- Separate cell-to-cell moves, turn actions and one-action command cards.
- Use source evidence to identify a first error, test a repair or keep a valid route.
Classroom use
Five complete 45-minute lessons:
1. Read a Playground Plan.
2. Follow and Test a Route.
3. Plan Directions for a Partner.
4. Keep or Repair a Route.
5. Navigate a Fresh Playground.
Use whole-class modelling, pairs or groups of three, and selected individual practice. The nine practice pairs provide support, core and extension choices. Prepare one mover per group and keep the second as a spare; reset pieces between cases. Teacher-controlled movement of the editable map marker and command groups uses ordinary PowerPoint edit view.
Students can speak, point, draw, use a communication device, direct an adult move or have an adult record. Adult preparation and reading support preserve the student's mathematical decision. Hold the new map for Lesson 5 and use the quiz after the formal responses.
Teacher benefits
All core maps, keys, cards, strips, movers, cases and matching guidance are included. Practical kits can be reused across the planned lessons. The fresh assessment and evidence forms support individual feedback on map reading and movement decisions.
