Fluent Words in Real Writing - Year 1 English Unit
Fluent Words in Real Writing helps Year 1 learners retain and use high-frequency words across connected text and independent composition. Children learn a dependable routine: read a word in a meaningful sentence, map a useful sound-spelling detail, hide the model, retrieve the spelling after a short delay and use the word in a fresh message.
The five 30-40 minute lessons build from explicit modelling and oral rehearsal to guided composition, partner explanation, unseen reading and independent original writing. The fixed word bank is with, have, from, they, some, come, said, what, when, little, one and were. Animal-care, classroom-news and friendship contexts keep the language meaningful while allowing teachers to observe whether a spelling transfers without a visible list.

Learning focus
Learners read target words in connected text, retrieve spellings after a delay, use the words in meaningful original sentences, compare attempts with a model and explain one exact spelling choice or correction. Copying and tracing remain useful practice but are not treated as proof of independent transfer.
Classroom use
Use the resources across five literacy sessions or select targeted pages for small-group intervention, review or assessment. Support uses fewer words, oral rehearsal and one mapped part at a time; core work mixes retrieval without a visible list; extension applies the same reasoning in new natural sentences without adding an untaught rule.
Assessment and answers
The independent assessment includes an unseen read, covered dictation, an original three- or four-sentence message and an explanation of one correction. The recording table separates independent retrieval from mapping with support. Matching answer pages and criterion-based marking guidance are included.
