Finding a missing number is easier when students know what the whole represents. This unit guides Year 3 learners through unknowns in different equation positions, beginning with models and guided decisions before moving to mixed practice, a partner challenge and an independent assessment. Students explain their choice and check a result rather than relying on a keyword rule.
The teaching sequence spans five 45–60-minute lessons. Start with 27 + ? = 64 and ? − 27 = 37 to discuss the whole and known part. Model how subtraction finds a missing part and how combining parts finds a missing whole. Students then compare related equations, repair a reversed-subtraction claim and apply the method to fresh values. The teacher guide includes equipment, access options, keys and marking guidance.
