Every Sound in the Blend - Year 3
Every Sound in the Blend helps learners retain all three starting consonant sounds when spelling and writing. Learners move from spoken segmentation and modelled sound maps to dictation, meaningful word comparisons, longer words, sentence transfer, checking and independent assessment.
The sequence distinguishes a blend, where each consonant sound is retained, from letter groups such as ng and sh that represent one sound. Word-meaning comparisons make corrections purposeful: sap and strap differ in both sounds and meaning, and split needs its middle starting sound to convey the intended action.
Five lessons, each approximately 50-55 minutes, include a timed teaching sequence, worked teacher models, guided practice, independent work, closing checks and support/core/extension choices. Longer-word spellings are modelled before learners apply them.
What's included
- 59-page A4 Unit Plan PDF: one contents cover, one quick-start page, ten lesson-plan pages, eleven colour resource pages, eighteen black-and-white pages and eighteen matching red answer/example pages.
- 20-slide teaching presentation in editable PPTX format.
- 22-slide quiz in editable PPTX format: ten questions, ten separate answer/feedback slides, cover and closing slide.
- 101-page watermarked Preview PDF containing the Unit Plan, teaching presentation and quiz.
- Clean Table of Contents JPEG.
Learning focus
- Segment spoken words and preserve every starting sound in str, spr, scr and spl.
- Match sounds to spellings, including one-sound digraphs within whole words.
- Check the intended meaning before changing a spelling.
- Apply taught patterns in meaningful sentences and longer words after modelling.
- Explain a specific omission and use read-back checking.
Classroom use
Use the presentation during explicit teaching, choose supported or core tasks, and use the paired game for six equal turns per learner. Use the ten-question quiz for discussion and checking. The independent assessment separates four fresh words from two familiar words; teacher records distinguish starting-blend accuracy, whole-word spelling, sentence evidence and support used. A smaller supported check is recorded separately.
Teacher benefits
One coordinated week of teaching and practice; ready-to-use worked models and answer examples; explicit support/core/extension choices; separate records of independent and supported evidence; meaningful sentence application beyond isolated spelling lists.
Digital product and licence
Digital download only. No physical item is supplied. PowerPoint-compatible software is required to edit the PPTX files. Use by the purchasing teacher with their own class; do not resell, redistribute or upload the files publicly. Each additional teacher requires their own licence.
