Equivalent Fractions Year 4 builds strong equivalent-fraction understanding through a carefully sequenced week of explicit teaching, visual modelling, hands-on exploration, games, practice and assessment.
Students connect fraction models with different symbolic names for the same amount, then generate equivalent fractions by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same factor. They solve missing-number equations, simplify fractions and use equivalence to make an introductory connection with common denominators. Explanation prompts encourage students to justify why a value stays the same.
