Support Year 3 students to explain possible emotional responses using story details and to choose safe actions. Students compare experience, expectations and context, practise clear permission exchanges, and refine responses when an answer changes or remains unclear.

The eight core lessons teach and assess the required learning. Two optional lessons provide further comparison and phrase-guide practice. Each lesson has a planned 50-minute teacher route and a complete independent editable PowerPoint. The assessment occurs in Lesson 7; clarification and safe-help learning is consolidated in Lesson 8.

What's included

  • Unit Plan PDF — 45 pages: table of contents, overview, sequence, ten lesson guides, resource guidance, classroom resources, sample answers and assessment guidance.
  • Ten separate editable lesson PowerPoints — 12 slides each; 120 lesson slides.
  • One editable quiz PowerPoint — 24 slides, with 10 questions and an explained answer immediately after each question, plus response guidance and reflection.
  • Two colour classroom displays.
  • Eight fictional case cards across two pages.
  • Choose, Explain and Check cooperative game — three pages containing rules, a six-stop mat and eight challenge cards.
  • Ten black-and-white learning-record worksheets and ten matching sample-answer pages, paired consecutively within the Unit Plan PDF.
  • Two-page practical assessment and one assessment rubric.
  • Separate clean Table of Contents JPEG.
  • Protected Preview PDF — 189 pages: all 45 Unit Plan pages, all ten lesson presentations in numerical order, then the quiz; original widescreen deck geometry retained.

Learning focus

  • Explain possible feelings with evidence from a fictional situation.
  • Select and justify a safe strategy, recognising that one strategy may not resolve the whole situation.
  • Ask about a specific action and communicate a clear, freely given choice.
  • Accept no, allow time for an unclear answer and respect changed permission.
  • Match respectful words with safe actions and manage disappointment separately.
  • Seek appropriate adult support without investigating or forwarding a worrying message.

Classroom use

Use fictional characters, case cards, paper props or puppets. Students practise respectful responses without real borrowing, touching, photography, posting or online accounts. All students can use their usual communication supports, including drawing, speech, writing, dictation, selected symbols or a device. Guided examples and contextual extensions are included. The assessment judges understanding and action rather than handwriting, confidence or speaking style.

Teacher benefits

Separate lesson files support flexible pacing. Fictional cases keep discussion focused on contextual reasoning. Immediate paired answer pages support checking while preserving each worksheet’s layout. The practical assessment records both explanations and respectful actions. The optional lessons add useful practice while retaining a complete eight-lesson core.
