Design a Weather-wise Habitat - Year 1
Children design and explain a fictional garden visitor station for a bean plant and a free bird. They connect useful features to living needs, justify a visitor choice using clearly labelled weather evidence, and test a teacher-prepared cardboard sliding gate with gentle pushes and pulls. The explanation and actual investigation records matter more than decoration or handwriting.
The full Science sequence contains ten required lessons of approximately 60 minutes. A supplied eight-session route combines Lessons 2–3 and 9–10 while retaining the needs audit, labelled plan, weather journal, actual six-trial movement comparison, demonstration and unfamiliar transfer. Short safe weather observations continue between lessons. There are ten separate editable presentations, each with its own teaching sequence; no second model is required for the transfer task.
What's included
- Ten separate editable lesson PowerPoints: 91 slides in total. Lessons 01–04 and 06–10 have 9 slides each; Lesson 05 has 10.
- One editable unit quiz PowerPoint: 23 slides, including ten questions, immediate answer/feedback slides and two unfamiliar-application questions.
- A 60-page A4 Unit Plan PDF: clean contents page, 28 teacher-guide pages and 31 resource pages.
- Colour resources: two displays, eight case cards across two pages, and a three-page Evidence Trail game (board, rules and challenge cards).
- Low-ink resources: ten worksheets with ten matching red model-answer/teacher-criteria pages, a separate blank actual-weather journal, two assessment pages and a four-dimension rubric.
- A 174-page watermarked Preview PDF showing the complete Unit Plan, all ten presentations in order and the quiz. Its first contents page is clean.
- A clean Table of Contents JPEG.
The download contains 17 files: 11 editable PowerPoints, 2 PDFs, 3 listing information TXT files and 1 contents JPEG. The 17-file total is not a page count.
Learning focus
- Link a plant or animal need to a functional feature rather than decoration.
- Distinguish a supplied illustrative five-day table, schematic weather-pattern scenes, actual dated observations and forecasts.
- Keep living needs in mind when making a weather-linked visitor choice.
- Predict, observe and honestly record a safe cardboard gate's movement, including catching or no movement if observed.
- Reset the same gate at the same middle start and repeat three rightward pushes and three leftward pulls. Recognise that hand force can vary.
- Compare records with predictions and peers' results, explain a limit and ask a useful next question.
- Communicate through speech, drawing, pointing, pictures, gestures, a communication board/device or an adult-recorded explanation, with the same science criteria.
Classroom use
Use teacher modelling, partner inquiry, purposeful records, a client demonstration and individual conferencing. Read prompts aloud as needed; provide large handled materials, smaller choices and adult scribing. Extend reasoning through an alternative justified feature, a comparison limit or a safe question.
Worksheet answers are red model responses or marking criteria. Open investigations do not have fabricated class measurements or guaranteed movement outcomes. The actual journal, pupil worksheets and assessment response spaces remain blank. The quiz has immediate black answer/feedback slides, and the guide includes quiz answers and the game's eight-card response criteria. The rubric dimensions are Understanding, Evidence and Process, Explanation, and Reflection, applied across living needs, weather reasoning and actual push/pull testing.
The model is a fictional visitor station, not a live-animal enclosure. Adults prepare and check large cardboard components; children use gentle actions on a clear track. Keep real organisms' care unchanged and follow school procedures for outdoor weather observation. No cords, elastic, projectiles or sharp hardware are required. Optional informal distance measurement occurs after movement stops.
The five-day weather table is explicitly illustrative, not measured climate data. Warmer/sunnier and cooler/wetter scenes are schematic and do not establish a particular Australian season. Lesson 5 provides a teacher-viewing link to the official Bureau of Meteorology Yawuru calendar, with the community and place identified. No calendar artwork or cultural knowledge is copied into this resource.
Formats and answers
PPTX: ten separate lesson decks (91 slides) plus one quiz (23 slides).
PDF: Unit Plan (60 pages) and complete watermarked Preview (174 pages).
JPG: one clean contents page.
TXT: three platform listing information files.
Resource pages: 31, comprising 7 colour pages and 24 low-ink/answer pages. Matching red model-answer/teacher-criteria pages are supplied for all ten worksheets; quiz feedback and a teacher answer reference are included.
Teacher benefits
Separate editable lesson files support pacing and adaptation. The compact route retains all three science strands and actual test evidence. Blank observation records keep supplied examples separate from class data. A practical rubric and varied communication choices support individual judgement without scoring decoration or handwriting.
Digital product and licence
Digital teaching files; no physical product. Editable PowerPoint files need compatible presentation software. The Unit Plan and resources are supplied as PDF pages; the Preview is watermarked. Use files within the applicable Sukindi and marketplace licence terms. Do not redistribute or resell the files.
