Country, Place and Care – Foundation HASS Unit Plan

$6.99

Country, Place and Care helps Foundation learners explain why Country/Place matters, ask respectful questions and propose a care action supported by learning. A named Gunditjmara case at Budj Bim and a contemporary museum account introduce continuing relationships between people, waters, knowledge and responsibility. Teachers then separately verify their school's own local attribution rather than applying a case-study name to every place.

The unit provides ten 60-minute lesson plans and ten independent editable lesson PowerPoints. The compact route combines lessons 1–2 and 9–10 into eight meetings, with practical guidance about which slides to use and assessment completed by session 8. Learners record actual observations, identify source information, compare viewpoints, ask permission and explain evidence. The cooperative game, learning records and conference assessment offer several ways to show the same understanding.

What's included

  • Ten separate editable lesson presentations: 11 slides each, 110 lesson slides altogether.
  • One editable 20-slide quiz: eight questions, separate answers/explanations and two unfamiliar applications.
  • A 49-page Unit Plan PDF with contents, overview, source/localisation guidance, ten lesson plans, eight-session mapping, assessment guidance and 31 resource/answer pages.
  • Two colour displays and eight case/source cards over two pages.
  • Three Evidence Trail game pages and a one-page teacher response guide.
  • Ten learning records plus ten matching red model-answer/criteria pages.
  • Two assessment pages and one rubric with four dimensions and three anchored levels.
  • A 179-page Preview PDF: the Unit Plan followed by all actual pages from lessons 1–10, then the quiz.
  • A clean Table of Contents JPG and three platform listing-text files.

Learning focus

Connect people and place; recognise continuing Country/Place relationships; identify a checked local attribution; distinguish what was observed from what a named source tells us; listen to viewpoints; ask respectful questions; propose care with evidence; reflect and apply learning at another place.

Classroom use

Read prompts aloud and use talking, drawing, pointing, gestures, a communication device or adult scribing as appropriate. Assess the idea and evidence. Reduce card choices or chunk an account for support; ask for a source limitation or new-place comparison for extension. Prepare a permitted account, authoritative school attribution/map and safe walk or approved indoor scenes. Essential assessment uses the learner's existing portfolio and a short conference; a public speech is not required.

The school Country/Place fields are intentionally blank for accurate local preparation. Unresolved attribution is followed up by the teacher. Aboriginal Peoples and Torres Strait Islander Peoples are distinguished, with diversity within both; a named account is not presented as every community's story. No cultural artwork, official calendar, portrait or community story is copied or imitated. Official/institutional factual references are credited; the Yawuru calendar is linked for teacher viewing only.

Matched examples support teacher feedback without prescribing one drawing or inventing a local school name.
