Counting What We Observe teaches students to keep a complete raw record and to answer the question the data can actually support. The anchor set contains the number of books on twelve desks. Students count every desk once, keep the zero, and distinguish the count value from its frequency and from the total number of books. They then enter the raw counts and summary table in real spreadsheet software. A paper or accessibility route may support preparation and response, while the spreadsheet demonstration remains part of the sequence.

The five lessons cover defining the observation, using one consistent rule, recording raw counts, summarising frequencies, and comparing small observed groups cautiously. Original visual pages give a model, twelve record cards, guided and core practice, a partner challenge, two rehearsal tasks, an independent assessment, matching red answers or marking guidance, and a rubric. The teacher guide includes a step-by-step spreadsheet task, differentiation, and assessment advice.
