Commas in Story Conversations - Year 6
Pupils learn to distinguish speech, reporting tags and actions, punctuate statements/questions/exclamations, keep speakers clear and explain commas from grammar and meaning. Lists and opening dependent clauses are taught alongside integrated-final and shared-subject choices that need no comma. Full-stop and suitable-conjunction repairs for comma splices are modelled. Complete original scenes keep decisions in context; optional interrupted speech extends learning after explicit modelling.
The sequence moves from explicit models to guided and differentiated practice, then a practical conversation workshop and independent transfer. The unseen assessment combines editing with an original 100–140-word conversation and three explanations. A four-by-four rubric supports particular feedback and reteaching; imaginative writing does not replace punctuation evidence.
