Commas and Clauses — Year 6 Unit builds accurate, purposeful comma use by teaching students to recognise the grammatical boundaries a comma marks.
Students develop clause knowledge alongside punctuation control so they learn when a comma is required, when it is optional and when it creates an error. Across approximately five lessons, the sequence covers independent and dependent clauses, coordinating conjunctions, opening words, phrases and clauses, non-essential embedded clauses, lists, direct address, dialogue and comma splices.
The editable presentation provides explicit instruction, worked examples and guided practice. A clause-boundary sort, four-station codebreaker game and seven focused worksheets then offer collaborative, independent, support and extension opportunities.
