Choosing Joining Words - Year 2
Children check that both sentence parts can stand on their own, then choose and, but, so or or for a clear message. They add an idea, show a contrast, explain a plausible result or offer alternatives. Oral rehearsal, pictures and short familiar examples lead into independent sentence writing. Children also explain how changing the joining word changes the message.
The sequence begins with complete sentence parts, develops the four meaning choices, then moves through partner games and differentiated writing to fresh assessment. Models use familiar classroom situations. Children compare sentences and explain their decisions, rather than choosing a word solely from sentence length.

Read prompts aloud where needed and record assistance separately from independent sentence knowledge.
