Choose the Words, Change the Meaning - Foundation
Help Foundation learners see how words work together to make a message clear. Across five complete lessons, children connect describing words with naming words, choose a useful description for a listener, compare sentences with different word order, and repair a message so that it matches the intended object or scene.

Learning focus
Connect a describing word with the thing it describes; choose a useful word for a listener; explain who follows when sentence order changes; repair a mismatch and give a reason; apply the ideas to fresh pictured contexts.
Lesson sequence
1. Find words that belong together: show which describing word refers to which thing.
2. Choose a word that helps: create a message that lets a listener find the intended object.
3. Same words, changed roles: act, point and explain who follows when word order changes.
4. Make the message match: repair a description or role sentence and explain the change.
5. Use and explain the meaning: apply the ideas to fresh scenes and gather assessment evidence.
Flexible participation
Teacher-read directions and clear pictured choices support oral responses, pointing, AAC, card arrangement and teacher scribing. Guidance includes support, core and extension options, observation prompts and practical next teaching steps. Open tasks include sample responses and allow other answers that match the scene. The assessment and rubric focus on meaning and word relationships; handwriting, neatness and reading speed are not graded.
Children compare complete sentences that can both make sense. They learn how a changed word or order changes the listener’s meaning, rather than treating every reversed sentence as incorrect.
Classroom use
Whole-class modelling, partner talk, small-group support, card-based practice, oral language work and flexible formative or end-of-unit assessment.
Formats and page counts
Unit Plan: PDF, 44 pages. Presentation: PPTX, 18 slides. Quiz: PPTX, 22 slides. Table of Contents: JPEG. Preview: PDF, 84 pages. Six matching worksheet answer pages are included within the Unit Plan, together with a game key and teacher assessment reference. Open responses allow other scene-matching answers.
Teacher benefits
Clear pictured contrasts make word choices visible. Separate quiz feedback supports discussion of meaning. Practical guidance and inclusive response modes help teachers gather evidence without requiring independent writing.
