Characters Belong in Places - Year 2 English Unit

Characters Belong in Places helps Year 2 learners move beyond simply naming where a story happens. Children learn to notice an actual word or illustration detail, connect it to a character's action or problem, and explain why the detail matters.

The five 30-40 minute lessons progress from verified creator attribution and teacher read-aloud modelling to guided evidence decisions, three scaffolded worksheets, a purposeful Story Place Discussion Gallery, fresh transfer tasks and an independent assessment. A recurring Setting Evidence Path keeps the reasoning concrete: notice the place, notice the character, connect the place to an action or problem, and point to the evidence.

The unit uses verified broad anchors from Benny Bungarra's Big Bush Clean-Up. The teacher supplies a lawful copy. The book, its text and its illustrations are not included.

Learning focus

Learners identify real setting details; connect a place condition to a character action or problem; distinguish evidence from a guess or personal preference; explain a supported connection; and apply the same reasoning to a fresh case.

Classroom use

Teach the sequence across five English sessions or select targeted pages for modelling, small-group instruction, intervention or assessment. Support allows oral, drawn or partly completed evidence responses. Core work requires an actual detail and justified connection. Extension asks learners to qualify a claim or offer another defensible interpretation while retaining the same learning target.

Assessment and answers

The independent assessment asks learners to explain two character-setting connections using actual details from the teacher's lawful copy. Six matching answer or marking pages and a four-criterion evidence rubric support feedback and next-step planning. Written, drawn and oral evidence are accepted.
