Changing States - Year 3 Science Unit Plan
Build explanations from what students observe. Changing States guides Year 3 students from classifying solids and liquids by shape and flow to investigating the effects of adding or removing heat. A flexible sponge and a thick liquid help challenge common misconceptions. Students observe melting, compare safe conditions, distinguish time from temperature and show water in two states with a labelled model.
The ten planned 60-minute lessons each have their own editable presentation. Teacher guidance provides preparation, timings, modelling, practical tasks, expected reasoning, support/extension and assessment prompts. The eight-session route combines lessons 1-2 and 9-10 with selected slides and completes the same essential learning and assessment by session 8.
Freezing is prepared and recorded by an adult between visits. Actual dates, times, observations and temperatures belong to the class's own evidence. The labelled 12-minute/8-minute practice example teaches table and graph interpretation without claiming those values are classroom results. Students apply their reasoning to fictional frozen-water-pack and adult water-to-ice scenarios, with explicit limits on what the evidence can establish.
What's included
- 47-page Unit Plan PDF: one contents page, 16 teacher-guidance pages, 20 student-resource pages and ten matched red answer pages.
- Ten separate editable lesson PowerPoints, ten slides each, totalling 100 lesson slides including covers and closing slides.
- One separate editable 20-slide unit quiz with eight questions and eight matching explanations, plus cover, participation guidance, reflection and closing slides.
- Two colour displays: Changing States - Key Ideas; How We Explain Our Evidence.
- Eight original illustrative case/source cards on two colour pages.
- Evidence Trail cooperative game: one rules page, one six-stop board and one page of eight challenge cards.
- Ten black-and-white worksheets, with red answer companions immediately after each worksheet.
- Two-page practical/portfolio assessment and one-page rubric.
- 167-page Preview PDF: Unit Plan first, lesson presentations 01-10 in order, then quiz. The first contents page is clear; subsequent pages carry the preview watermark.
- Separate Table of Contents JPEG and three accompanying platform listing TXT files.
Learning focus
Observable properties of solids and liquids; flexible solids and slow-flowing liquids; melting with heat added; freezing with heat removed; water remaining water; questions and predictions; safe fair comparisons; real records; time and temperature units; tables and graphs; evidence-based explanations; models and their limits; everyday uses of scientific knowledge.
Classroom use
Teach with the lesson presentations and use the worksheets, cards, displays and game to support observation, reasoning and discussion. Collect practical records and portfolio evidence throughout the sequence. Complete the assessment through short oral, drawn, written, demonstrated or device-supported responses. The quiz is a supporting check, not a substitute for practical inquiry evidence.
Teacher benefits
- Separate lesson files support preparation and selective teaching.
- The compact route preserves the same essential assessment within eight sessions.
- Matched answer companions preserve each worksheet's printed layout.
- Practical and portfolio assessment supports several communication modes without changing the science expectations.
- Explicit model and practice-data labels help students distinguish examples from observations.
