Blending and Segmenting Year 3

Help Year 3 students read and spell increasingly complex words by explicitly connecting phonemes, graphemes, syllables and meaning.

Blending and Segmenting Year 3 begins with an editable 18-slide teaching presentation. Students learn how to start on the left, identify known patterns, stretch sounds, blend successively and check whether a word makes sense. They also learn to segment spoken words for spelling, split longer words into syllables and try another pronunciation when the first attempt does not fit the sentence.

The 29-page Unit Plan turns those strategies into classroom practice. Colour posters and reference materials support modelling and display. Reusable word-building cards, the Sound Path Challenge and the Phoneme Pose Challenge provide collaborative practice.
