Help students explain a shared literary idea without assuming that every story, family or community is the same. Students use details from two texts to show continuity and change, then explain how time, place or relationships affect events. The week combines explicit modelling, authentic book discussion, guided response, a cooperative evidence game and independent transfer.
The teacher supplies lawful copies of The Lost Girl by Ambelin Kwaymullina, illustrated by Leanne Tobin; My Place by Nadia Wheatley, illustrated by Donna Rawlins; and Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña, illustrated by Christian Robinson. Select two clearly different dated children's spreads from My Place. These commercial books, pages and illustrations are not included. Book-specific answer pages give evidence criteria rather than invented quotations or page facts.

Learning focus
Context as time, place and circumstances; shared ideas about belonging; family and community relationships; continuity and change; accurate evidence from both texts; rejecting unsupported assumptions; explaining why a difference matters.
Classroom use
Five lessons of 50 minutes. Lessons 1–3 centre the real books and student-observed evidence. Lesson 4 uses Ruth and Ari's original cases to practise the comparison method and check claims. Lesson 5 uses new Tomas and Lee library cases for independent reasoning and a connection to a chosen anchor book. Lesson plans include support, extension and checks for learning. Read aloud, allow speaking or pointing, and use adult recording where needed without supplying the student's ideas.
