Ask, Record and Improve Our Class Data - Year 1

$4.99

Give students a practical route from asking one clear question to improving the way they collect and record class data. Students define two or three choices, keep an ID and actual answer for each respondent, represent the same replies in different ways and compare their records with the source.

Provided examples support modelling; fresh polls provide real collection evidence. The Question Station uses six question cards and a reusable twelve-respondent kit. The Collection Clinic explores six specific errors, including omissions, duplication, mixed-up counts, a missing category, an extra digital count and two questions that must remain separate. Students try a useful improvement in a fresh poll.

Resource pool

Four colour references; nine practice worksheets and their matching answers; Question Station guidance; six question cards; eleven whole category labels; twelve neutral ID markers; a three-lane mat; respondent and checking models; reusable record and answer; Collection Clinic rules, six source cases and three roles; two clinic check sheets and answers; improvement plan and provided answer; two formal assessment tasks and answers; practical observation form; marking guide; four-criterion, four-level rubric.

Learning focus

Ask one clear categorical question; define choices; collect each actual reply once; retain respondent IDs; record the same data using lists, images, drawings, objects/markers, tallies, symbols and a digital tool; preserve per-category counts and totals; distinguish zero from an unknown reply; trace a proved mistake to its source; keep different questions and samples separate; try and explain a collection improvement.

Classroom use

Five 45-minute lessons for Year 1. Use small groups of 6–12 respondents and reset reusable kit pieces between questions. Open the teaching PPTX in normal edit view with a teacher for digital collection. Students can choose, point, move a marker or direct an adult to move it; manually enter and check the counts against the same source.

Use the provided-source assessment to check recording and source fidelity. Use the fresh-poll task and practical observations to assess actual acquisition, two faithful recording methods, real digital participation and checking. A completed worked example does not prove an observed skill. Quiz percentages, handwriting, speed and extension are not pass gates.

Access and differentiation

Adult reading, pointing, pictures, a communication device and adult recording are valid supports. Plans distinguish access support from mathematical prompting. Concrete ID checks and smaller supported examples help students keep every reply; extension compares valid methods or fresh samples without inventing results.
