Yahoo Creek: Persuasive Writing

Yahoo Creek — Arguments, Evidence & Perspective is a complete Years 3–6 English unit that develops persuasive writing through close attention to evidence, source credibility and respectful comparison of perspectives.

Students work with an original fictional classroom dossier about whether the old Yahoo Creek footbridge should be preserved as a community story site or replaced with a new crossing. They compare a council notice, resident memory, engineer note, survey results, reporter summary and anonymous post. The materials are a literacy simulation and do not make claims about real Yahoo Creek history.

Across a flexible five-week sequence, students distinguish fact, opinion and bias; identify ethos, pathos and logos; test authority, purpose, evidence and limitations; build claims with reasons and evidence; use Hamburger and PEEL paragraph structures; acknowledge counterarguments; prepare respectful rebuttals; debate; revise; publish and reflect.

Guided choices, sentence starters and Hamburger structure support Years 3–4 learners. Credibility reasoning, source limitations, PEEL structure, counterargument and independent drafting extend Years 5–6 learners. The sequence culminates in the Yahoo Creek Persuasive Inquiry, where students make an evidence-based recommendation to the fictional council.
