Word Families Across a Text - Year 3
Students first connect familiar help and care words, then read short informational passages and test new words against sentence meaning. They learn to distinguish a real family link from accidental matching letters. Guided reading, mixed independent decisions, a 12-card partner game and two rehearsal tasks lead to a fresh assessment: explain two word-building choices and use a new family member accurately.

Learning focus
identify a meaningful base and affix, read the complete word, explain its meaning with a sentence clue, and reject accidental letter patterns. Examples include helpful/unhelpful, careful/careless and act/action/active. Students learn that mis- means wrongly in words such as misread, while mist is one base word.
Classroom use
Five 45–60-minute lessons. Use the oral entry check to select support, core or extension. Students can explain orally, type or write when the response mode is not the assessed skill.
Formats and page counts
PDF and editable PPTX. 24-page Unit Plan PDF, 18-slide presentation, 26-slide quiz; 68 pages/slides across those sources. Six red answer/marking pages plus explained quiz answers are included.
Teacher benefits
The teacher can see the student's actual word-part and sentence evidence, then record a matched next step on the rubric.
