When a Story Feels Familiar — Year 1 English Unit Plan
When a Story Feels Familiar develops useful connections with literary texts. Children learn that an experience becomes helpful when it connects to an actual story clue and explains something about a character or event.
The unit includes four complete original illustrated stories: The Wobbly Tower, Under the Big Umbrella, The New Game and A Place on the Bench. The first three support explicit models and guided practice; the fresh Bench story supports individual assessment before a personal example is modelled.
Learners can speak, point, draw, dictate or write a short response. A supplied, observed or classroom example is acceptable. Different plausible feelings and relevant connections are welcomed when children give a story clue and reason.

The 26 resource pages include two colour displays, four story pages, six practice/exit worksheets, one fresh-story assessment, seven matched red answer companions, four colour game pages, a rubric and an observation sheet. The cooperative game includes six story-detail cards, six safe-experience cards, a ten-step trail board and directions with reusable prompt strips.
Learning focus
Identify a relevant story detail; connect it with an experience or feeling; explain how the link helps understand a character or event; improve a vague memory by naming the story connection; support a possible feeling with a clue.
Classroom use
Five lessons of 35–40 minutes, with modelling, guided and independent practice, support, extension and learning checks. Teacher read-aloud is supported throughout. Use the fresh-story assessment for individual evidence, and the quiz after assessment or for later revision.
Formats and answers
PDF and editable PPTX. Teaching content totals 70 pages/slides: 33 Unit Plan pages, 19 presentation slides and 18 quiz slides. The Preview repeats these 70 pages/slides. Seven immediately following answer companions provide facts, labelled possible personal responses and acceptance guidance. Quiz feedback is on separate slides.
Teacher benefits
Original included texts remove the need to source a separate storybook. Generous response spaces and multiple modes support access. Cooperative play rehearses the same reasoning assessed individually. Assessment focuses on meaning rather than spelling, decoding speed or a prescribed emotion.
Digital product and licence
