Vivid Language in Reviews - Year 6
Teach metaphor, simile, personification, idiom, imagery, hyperbole and ordinary emotive vocabulary through original reviews of invented school-friendly activities. Complete paired sources keep factual details unchanged so pupils can compare a neutral, enthusiastic, critical or mixed recommendation accurately.
Five detailed 55-minute lessons combine clear modelling, guided comparison, supported/core/extension analysis and an 18-case cooperative language clinic. Pupils practise quoting a choice, explaining its contextual meaning and linking it to a named reader using may/could. They consider literal sensory imagery, justified overlapping interpretations and the difference between deliberate exaggeration and factual evidence.
The fresh final reading assessment includes two reviews, a shared fact box and three substantial response sheets. A separate honest-review workshop uses a third fact set, with an 80–110-word writing task and two annotated reasons. A four-criterion rubric records reading evidence, communication support and a precise next step; writing does not replace missing interpretation evidence.

Learning focus
Quote and identify an author's choice; interpret its meaning; explain stance and likely audience effects; compare recommendations; preserve facts when revising a review.
Classroom use
Whole-class teaching, paired source discussion, flexible small-group clinic and independent assessment. Read sources aloud or in chunks, explain unfamiliar vocabulary and allow pointed, spoken or scribed explanations while retaining the same reasoning goal. All invented review contexts are reading materials; no separate game or exhibition purchase is required.
