Visual Language Studio - Years 3–4

A practical Years 3–4 Visual Arts unit with ten separate lesson PowerPoints, a process folio and assessment resources.

Pupils investigate how line, light and dark value, colour, space, texture and composition can communicate an idea. They make purposeful trials, compare two original compositions of the same subject, choose visual conventions and materials, create an artwork, respond to feedback and explain their decisions using visible evidence.

The folio records trials, observations, both plans, a supported selection, making and refinement decisions, and the final explanation. Worked examples show possible reasoning while allowing different valid responses. Assessment considers experimentation, intention, making and explanation rather than attractiveness or neatness.

Classroom supports include pointing, speaking, drawing, dictation, selected symbols and communication boards, alongside practical tool and material adjustments. Pupils retain artistic choices and can choose an imagined subject instead of sharing personal experiences. Colour meanings remain open to interpretation.

Learning focus

Experiment with line weight and direction, light-dark value, colour relationships, open and filled space, texture, processes and composition. Compare two original plans of the same subject and connect a selected choice to an intended idea. Explain how observed trials informed making and a decision to refine or keep a choice.

Collect observations during Lessons 1–7 and finish the artwork, folio and conference assessment in Lesson 8. Lessons 9–10 revisit familiar choices through an optional variation and viewing walk. Pupils may choose an imagined subject and private sharing.
