Tricky Words in Word Families - Year 2
Tricky Words in Word Families gives Year 2 teachers a complete five-lesson sequence for spelling decisions that need more than a quick sound match. Students connect a word to a genuinely useful relative, notice an unusual part or a known pattern, and test the choice in a sentence. They also learn to reject look-alikes that share letters without sharing meaning.
Start with the colour display and twelve worked teaching cards. Move through guided, core and transfer practice, then use the two-partner spelling-adviser game to make every turn an explanation. Rehearsal pages prepare students to edit a fresh text independently. The assessment asks students to correct spellings, write a new do-family member and explain two distinct spelling aids. The four-criterion rubric provides space for observed evidence and a targeted next teaching step.

Learning focus
Use known spelling patterns, meaningful relatives and careful checking to read and write tricky frequent words in context. Examples include say/said, do/does, come/coming, help/helpful, care/careful and play/player. Contrasts such as corn/corner and was/were prevent overgeneralising an ending rule.
Classroom use
Five 30–40-minute lessons with brief practice bursts. Model aloud, guide a decision, practise with a partner, revisit after a delay, then gather independent assessment evidence. Support, core and extension routes are described in the teaching material.
Answers
Six matching red-answer/marking pages follow their student pages in the Unit Plan. Quiz answers and explanations follow each question.
Teacher benefits
A coherent teaching week, substantial practice, sentence-level transfer, specific feedback and an observable assessment record.
