Talking to Different People - Year 2 English Unit
Talking to Different People helps Year 2 learners adapt requests for familiar and unfamiliar listeners without reducing language choices to “formal is good” and “informal is bad”. Children learn to notice who is speaking, who is listening, what the speaker needs and which words and tone make the message clear and respectful in that relationship and context.
The five 45-50 minute lessons progress from diagnostic requests and explicit modelling to guided comparison, independent decisions, purposeful role-play, transfer, feedback, revision and assessment. Friend, classmate, visitor, librarian, teacher, coach and community-helper scenarios give learners repeated opportunities to explain a specific choice rather than offer a preference alone.

Learning focus
Learners identify speaker, listener and purpose; make a clear respectful request; select words and tone that suit the relationship and situation; explain the choice with a specific clue; and improve a message after feedback. Home languages, community dialects and accessible response modes remain valid.
Classroom use
Teach the sequence across five English sessions or select targeted pages for modelling, small-group rehearsal, intervention or assessment. Support uses visual role cues, sentence stems, partner rehearsal, signing or AAC; core work requires independent comparison and explanation; extension adds an unexpected listener question and a justified clarification.
Assessment and answers
The independent assessment uses two contrasting role-plays: a familiar friend and a visiting librarian. Learners then identify one choice changed for the second listener and explain why. Matching worksheet and rehearsal answers, assessment marking guidance and a four-criterion evidence rubric are included.
