Learners check a complete base before adding -ing and explain the spelling choice. The unit teaches the one-final-silent-e change through make/making and hope/hoping, then contrasts words such as see/seeing and play/playing so children learn the condition rather than overapply it. Five 30–40-minute lessons take learners from explicit modelling through guided and mixed decisions to sentence writing and independent assessment.

What's included

  • A 26-page Unit Plan PDF: clean table of contents, three pages of teacher guidance, and 22 full-page resource pages.
  • One colour display, “Check the base before -ing”.
  • Twelve worked spelling-model cards over four colour pages.
  • Three Suffix Decision Trail worksheets—guided, core and transfer—each followed immediately by its red answer page.
  • Explain the Exception partner game: directions, twelve challenge cards and word-part tiles.
  • Two mixed-decision rehearsal worksheets—At the Park and Repair a Claim—each followed by its red answer page.
  • Independent mixed-decision assessment and red answer page.
  • Learning-evidence rubric with four criteria and room for evidence and a next step.
  • Editable 18-slide PowerPoint teaching presentation and editable 26-slide question-and-answer quiz.
  • A 70-page watermarked Preview PDF (26 Unit Plan pages, 18 presentation slides and 26 quiz slides).

Learning focus

Choose the correct -ing spelling from a familiar or newly encountered base, read and use the resulting word in a natural sentence, and explain whether one final silent e drops or the base spelling stays. The assessment asks for two distinct reasons, including a case that changes and one that does not.

Classroom use

Use the display and worked cards for explicit modelling. Follow with guided, core and transfer worksheets, then partner challenge cards and word tiles. Use the two rehearsal tasks before the independent assessment. Mark with the paired red pages and record criterion-based evidence and the next teaching step on the rubric. Offer oral explanation or tiles where extra handwriting would hide the spelling knowledge; use a new family member and justified counterexample for extension.

Teacher benefits

A sequenced five-lesson plan, model-to-transfer practice, ready paired answers, a game that requires an explanation on every turn, and a rubric tied to observable spelling decisions.
