Smart Systems Unit - Years 5-6
Help students understand how purposeful systems work and how designers improve them. This complete five-lesson unit moves from familiar devices and energy transformations to sustainable systems, electrical circuits and a structured smart-system design challenge.
Students identify system inputs, components, processes and outputs; compare everyday systems for function and sustainability; examine the Brewarrina fish traps respectfully as a living example of First Nations knowledge and sustainable system design; read and draw circuit diagrams; diagnose simple circuit faults; and plan, test and evaluate a smart-system concept using clear criteria and evidence.
The cohesive presentation, investigations, games, worksheets, project planner, assessment, answer pages and rubric support explicit teaching, guided practice, collaborative learning and independent demonstration of understanding.
