Build a clear route from hearing a word to spelling and checking it. Short Vowels, Strong Endings teaches Year 3 learners that one sound may use more than one letter. Students map badge and catch into three sound boxes while keeping the separate first sounds in bridge.

The unit applies dge and tch as useful patterns after short vowels in selected words. Known ge/ch alternatives are compared explicitly, and much, rich, such and which are taught as familiar exceptions. Students use pronunciation, meaning and remembered spellings alongside the vowel clue.

Five detailed lessons of 50–60 minutes include worked models, guided practice, independent application, exit evidence, support, extension and next-teaching guidance. The resources move through sound maps, comparison, dictation, a cooperative game, repair explanations, sentences, an original short story and fresh picture captions.

The final assessment combines six fresh dictated words, two dictated sentences and an explanation of a spelling check. A teacher record separates final-pattern accuracy from whole-word accuracy and records support. Reflection and a three-level analytic rubric support feedback. A ten-question quiz retrieves taught knowledge alongside the independent spelling evidence.
