Students sort, name and create familiar shapes, then recognise and describe shapes within specific parts of objects. Across five complete 45-minute lessons they trace boundary features, compare turns and sizes, change an announced sorting rule and create chosen pictures from more than one shape family.

Circles, triangles, squares and non-square rectangles appear in varied colours and orientations. The teacher guidance explains the square-as-special-rectangle relationship and the separate square/non-square rectangle convention used by the four-way mats. Students justify a named wheel, face, panel or other component rather than treating a whole three-dimensional object as a flat shape.

Learning focus

Sort, name and create four familiar shape families; describe curved/straight boundaries, sides and corners; explain unchanged family names after turns or size changes; identify named shape parts within objects and give a visible feature reason.

Classroom use

Whole-class explicit modelling, guided responses, differentiated practice, mathematics rotations and individual assessment observations. Print the PDF on A4 at 100% / Actual Size for both practical kits. Adults may cut pieces and support handling. A table scene or supplied picture provides access instead of a classroom walk.

Teacher benefits

All five learning actions are taught and assessed within the core sequence. Support, core and extension pages offer different entry points without replacing creation or environmental reasoning. Students may point, place, draw, speak or dictate; adult word reading/handling are recorded separately from content hints. Open creation examples accept other true solutions. The rubric records learning areas separately rather than averaging away missing evidence.

Digital product and licence

Digital educational resource; no physical item or prepared manipulatives are included. Follow the licence terms provided with your purchase.
