Sentence Fixers - Year 2
Children become sentence fixers through short garden-club messages. They read each idea on its own, finish missing parts, repair run-ons and choose from and, but, so and or to show the intended relationship.
The teaching sequence combines oral rehearsal, modelling, partner editing and purposeful writing. Correct simple sentences are kept, and children learn why a sentence containing and is not automatically a compound sentence. The final writing and fresh assessment ask children to transfer the checking routine to new messages.

Learning focus
Check that both parts of a compound sentence express complete ideas. Repair missing subjects or actions and run-ons. Choose a coordinating word that fits the intended meaning. Rehearse, write and reread for an audience. Use capitals and full stops. An optional three-idea extension follows secure two-clause work.
Classroom use
Five 45-minute lessons for whole-class modelling, partner practice and independent writing. Plans include timed teaching steps, questions, anticipated errors, differentiation and evidence-based next steps. Children may speak, point, move cards or use adult recording support; teachers record that support separately from the grammar judgement.
Teacher benefits
A consistent read-check-fix-reread routine across lessons and resources.
Explicit distinction between two independent ideas and correct simple sentences.
Low-ink response pages alongside colour displays and editing activities.
Model answers, acceptance guidance, fresh assessment and a rubric support feedback on structure and meaning separately from spelling.
