“I liked it” is a starting point. This unit teaches children to say which part they enjoyed and why that part matters to them. Teachers model clear preference language, finding an accurate detail and linking that detail to a reason. Children rehearse orally, work with a partner, recommend a text and improve replies that are vague, invented or unrelated.

The complete core uses three supplied original practice texts and a separate new assessment passage. Children can have different favourites and still give sound explanations. The teaching plans provide modelling, practical lesson steps, support, extension, formative checks and final assessment guidance.

Learning focus

Use liked or enjoyed to communicate a preference; name a specific accurate part of a text; explain why that detail supports the preference; discuss another person's choice respectfully; recognise and repair vague or unsupported responses.

Classroom use

Year 2 whole-class teaching, guided practice, partner talk and short independent responses. Read passages aloud when helpful. Children may speak, point and explain, draw with labels, write briefly or have an adult record their exact words. The assessment separates the quality of the explanation from handwriting, reading speed and the chosen favourite. Provide a classroom counter per pair for the game.
