This five-lesson Year 3 English unit helps students recognise a shared purpose, identify intended readers from actual words and details, and explain why a useful change helps a particular reader. Students compare wholly original notices set in imagined school shared spaces, then plan, draft and revise a message pair. A new shared-project-table stimulus supports an independent final comparison and adaptation.

The focus is language and reader fit. Adult helpers and students have different roles and background knowledge; colour, length and age alone do not prove the audience. The notices describe fictional classroom routines for teachers to adapt to their own setting.

Learning focus

Recognise a shared purpose; identify intended readers using actual clues; explain useful choices in wording, detail and pictures; adapt a message while retaining purpose and facts; give a reason for a reader-fit change.

Classroom use

Lesson 1: find one shared job and two intended readers.

Lesson 2: compare word choices, detail and helpful labels.

Lesson 3: match, explain and challenge with evidence.

Lesson 4: make and revise a useful message pair.

Lesson 5: recognise and adapt independently using a new stimulus.

Each lesson has an objective, success criteria, named materials, preparation, timed modelling/guided/independent/reflection steps, practical support and extension, and an observable learning check. Plans total 55 minutes each and can be adapted within a 50–60-minute lesson. Teacher read-aloud, pointing, oral explanation and scribing provide access without supplying the intended-reader answer.

Use the anchors and paired models for whole-class modelling, comparison pages for guided/individual practice, Message Match Studio in groups of three, and the planning/drafting/feedback pages for writing and revision. Assessment uses a new shared-project-table situation. The rubric records shared purpose, reader evidence, useful comparison, and adaptation/reason. Support: teacher read-aloud, oral response, pointing and scribing. Extension: experienced student/new adult helper comparison and less familiar readers.

Teacher benefits

Original paired texts keep the purpose consistent while changing useful reader detail. A four-round game requires evidence without speed scoring. Supported/core/extension tasks, two drafting routes, feedback, unseen assessment and an analytic rubric help teachers see the next teaching step.
