Same Letter Different Sound Unit – Year 1

The Same Letter, Different Sound Unit gives Year 1 students a clear, practical introduction to changing grapheme–phoneme correspondences. Students compare short and long vowel sounds, notice the effect of silent e, distinguish hard and soft c and g, and listen for changing sounds in s, ch and th. They also explore the related idea that one sound can be represented by different spellings.

The sequence combines explicit teaching with oral rehearsal, reference cards, sorting, matching, board-game practice and independent written work.
