Reporting Events and Recognising Commentary - Year 6
This Year 6 English unit teaches learners to compare a factual report, a personal recount and an editorial; quote useful wording; attribute a speaker’s view; check claims against source records; and explain or revise unsupported or biased wording. All fictional texts and source records are supplied.
Five lessons of about 55 minutes build from diagnosis and modelling through differentiated practice and an evidence-based game to a fresh independent task. Learners practise with a Mini Museum event and a single model-car trial, then transfer their thinking to a new Class Puzzle Showcase.
The unit plan includes a one-page teacher quick-start, five complete two-page lesson plans, three displays, a diagnostic, full source records and passages, support/core/extension practice across three strands, a picture-and-caption investigation, 12 case cards, and the complete Reporting Route game. The game provides a 20-space board, 16 challenge cards, four counters, a full checker bank, a turn model and an individual response slip. No dice are needed.
The fresh assessment includes two new messages, factual-report and fictional-personal-recount writing pages, bias and wording analysis, teacher protocol, reflection, a four-criterion/four-level rubric and a scored worked example. Faithful red answer pages, open-response models and teacher reasons are included.
Access options include source reading, enlarged print, partner rehearsal during practice, typing, dictation and recorded responses. Learners retain responsibility for their own choices and reasoning. Assessment records actual support and focuses on language reasoning.

Learning focus
Compare purposes; explain quotations and attribution; preserve counts and source limits; recognise evaluative wording and selective evidence; write a factual report and a clearly fictional personal recount; justify a wording choice.
Classroom use
Teach the five-lesson sequence, selecting the appropriate practice level. Use case cards for supported discussion, Reporting Route for individual formative reasoning and the fresh task for independent transfer. Keep source records available and answer banks separate.
Teacher benefits
Complete original fictional sources avoid the need to locate external texts. Differentiated practice, explicit modelling and separate teacher reasons support feedback. The fresh assessment uses a different event from the practice sources.
Digital product and licence
Digital resource; no physical product will be sent. Print selected student pages and keep teacher answers separate. A PDF reader and compatible presentation software are required. No external texts, logins or student accounts are needed for the activities. Use is subject to the seller’s published licence.
