Pronouns That Keep Meaning Clear - Year 2
Help pupils identify who or what a pronoun means by looking back for a real text clue. An original puppet-table story links the teaching, matching cards, cooperative game and practice pages. Clearly labelled speaker and ownership scenes make mine/yours and ours/theirs meaningful. Pupils also learn when using a name will make an uncertain reference clear.
Five complete lessons progress through modelling, guided turns, partner work and independent application. A fresh model-display passage is kept for assessment. A separate eight-question quiz retrieves taught examples with immediate explanations. The teacher quick-start and lesson plans include preparation, timing, access choices, specific support/challenge and next-step checks.

Learning focus
- Trace personal and group references to named people or things across sentences.
- Choose they/them by reading a complete sentence and identifying its referent.
- Use mine, yours, ours, theirs, hers and his with the stated speaker and owner.
- Explain a word clue and preserve the supplied intended meaning.
- Use a name when two possible references would leave the reader unsure.
Classroom use
Use across five lessons of approximately 45–50 minutes. Display the editable slides, read passages aloud, model a turn, then use matching cards and a cooperative game before independent practice. Reserve the fresh assessment passage for the final lesson. Pointing, speaking, drawing, communication-device use, short writing and adult-recorded responses are supported. Record reference, form/ownership and clarity/explanation separately on the rubric; assess meaning rather than speed or neatness.
Teacher benefits
Connected original contexts support meaningful reference. Explicit speaker/owner labels reduce guessing. Independent assessment uses a fresh passage. Teacher models and accepted equivalents support consistent checking. Editable slides allow teachers to adapt visible teaching text.
