Plan Budgets with Sensible Estimates - Year 4

Build clear budget reasoning through complete fictional classroom orders. Students change unit prices to useful whole-dollar values while retaining the exact required quantities. They calculate lower and upper costs, explain whether those costs prove a fit or an overrun, recognise uncertainty and verify the original order with exact arithmetic.

Full alternatives, original bill claims and a changed-price case develop comparison and checking. The unit teaches that nearest-dollar rounding is not a guaranteed bound, a high upper estimate alone cannot reject an order, and a plausible-sized bill still needs exact verification. Corrections are recorded separately from original claims.

What's included

one high-quality JPEG.

Matched keys/answers are included for the prerequisite, nine practice pages, both independent applications, all three fresh formal sources, both complete practical kits and extension investigation. Unit-plan answers are red; deck answers are black. Student/evidence/record pages remain blank for use. Paper resource designs are supplied in PDF; native teaching and quiz text/models are editable in PPTX.

Learning focus

Choose an estimate to suit the question; round unit prices in useful lower, nearest and upper directions; keep quantities unchanged; combine complete order costs; distinguish enough money, too much and uncertainty; compare original full plans; check every required exact line total; explain and separately repair a bill claim; revise a conclusion when a price changes.

Classroom use

Five 45-minute core lessons. Use named core cases at the supplied pace; other complete cases remain available for rotations, extra practice or independent transfer. Practical cards can be cut as whole sources. Larger bill and comparison cases may stay visible beside the record. Keep teacher keys hidden until first attempts.

The three fresh printed assessment sources begin only in Lesson 5. Collect all three first attempts before answer feedback and allow continuation for exact checks and explanation when required. Judge the four rubric criteria separately: price direction, quantities/bound costs, budget conclusion, exact checking/explanation. Keep evidence records blank until actual student work is collected.

Access and differentiation

Read one condition aloud. Students may point, speak, draw, write or direct neutral adult recording while retaining the mathematical criterion. Record number, method or decision hints separately from access support. Extension asks students to compare useful estimates, explain a tie and create a complete new challenge with a hidden exact key after core work.

Teacher benefits

Complete source facts stay beside the task. Separate estimate, first decision and later exact-check spaces support evidence of reasoning. Complete keys explain decisions and preserve original claims. Core choices and rotations support practical pacing. All prices are fictional Australian dollars; the unit requires no actual purchase, family financial disclosure, supplier brand, paid website or optional account.

Digital product and licence
