Pictures Speak to the Reader - Year 3
Start with one garden caption and compare the extra information supplied by close and wide pictures. Move to seed-preparing and book-sorting scenes, describing gaze and gesture before explaining their possible effect on a reader. Library-welcome and lost-hat examples build purposeful choices and evidence-based reasoning. A partner picture-editor game, fresh garden report and independent message-making task develop the same skill in new contexts.

Learning focus
Identify information added by an image; justify close/wide views for a purpose; explain gaze, gesture and relationships using context; compare useful details; create a coherent caption and picture; explain the effect and limits of a changed visual choice.
Classroom use
Teach across five lessons. Lessons 1–3 allow about 45 minutes each; Lesson 4 about 60 and Lesson 5 about 65, or split its independent assessments into two quiet blocks. Print the Desk Mat at 100% and both Editor card pages at 50% so they fit. Read longer directions aloud, enlarge pictures or let children speak, point or have an adult record their own reasoning. Keep answer examples out of view during independent assessment.
Answers
ten resource answer pages in the Unit Plan; quiz answers are native slide text. Open answers are possible responses, with other supported alternatives accepted.
Teacher benefits
Teacher modelling and timed guided/independent tasks support consistent use. Familiar classroom examples connect visual detail to the reader's purpose. Sentence frames and practical response options support access. Marking separates relevant meaning and visible evidence from drawing skill; the rubric profile remains separate from the /20 assessment.
Digital product and licence
Digital download; no physical item. PDF resources and editable teaching/quiz PPTX files. Use according to the seller's licence; do not redistribute or resell the files.
