One Topic, Different Text Purposes - Year 1
Children compare original short stories, fact pages, invitations and recommendations about the same topic. They decide how a text helps a reader, point to a useful clue and explain their choice. Garden and library examples make the comparison concrete; fresh pet texts support transfer and assessment.
The unit moves beyond naming a text type. It shows that drawings occur in different kinds of text, an invitation can also give information, and an explained additional purpose may be valid. Children compare the inviting words, time and place in two invitations, and the headings and facts in two fact pages. They then create a short page for a chosen reader need.

Learning focus
Identify a defensible main purpose; connect a relevant word, image or layout clue to the reader's need; recognise a helpful shared feature in texts with a common purpose; apply the reasoning to a new topic and the child's own purposeful page.
Classroom use
Five lessons of about 40 minutes each, with explicit teacher modelling, guided and independent practice, support, challenge, exit evidence and feedback. Suitable for whole-class teaching, partner discussion and targeted follow-up. All short teaching texts are supplied. No extra book, website, paid resource or real animal is needed. Event notices are fictional examples.
Read texts neutrally for independent assessment. Speaking, pointing with an explanation, drawing, communication-device responses and adult-recorded words are supported. Assess text reasoning rather than decoding speed, spelling, handwriting or cutting. Keep answers separate while children work. Use half-size reader cards with full-size text pages beside the mats, or point to matches on screen.
Formats
Core teaching files: PDF Unit Plan and two editable PowerPoint files.
Printable resource pages are fixed PDF designs; presentation and quiz text is editable.
Answers
Seven matching red-answer/model pages are included immediately after their source pages. The quiz has eight answer/explanation slides. The purposeful-page model gives a complete invitation; other defensible original responses may also be valid.
