Narrative Writing Year 1 Unit

Build confident early narrative writers with a clear sequence from oral storytelling to independent writing. This Year 1 English unit teaches students to identify and create characters and settings, order events across a beginning, middle and end, connect a story problem with a sensible solution, and plan, draft and edit a short narrative.

The unit combines a 17-slide editable teaching presentation with two colourful displays, Story Spark Dice, two original sequencing-card stories and a sorting mat. Ten black-and-white student practice pages provide generous drawing and handwriting space. Students finish with The Missing Lunchbox narrative assessment, supported by an analytic rubric and five matching red-answer pages where answers are meaningful.
