Meaning Clues for Tricky Words - Year 4
Teach students to read the whole sentence, identify the intended meaning and choose the spelling that fits. This unit moves from oral diagnosis and clear worked examples to differentiated passage practice, a small-group game, proofreading and original school-news writing.
The six taught pairs are here/hear, flower/flour, week/weak, peace/piece, plain/plane and heel/heal. Students also read, inspect and retrieve because, different, friend, people and through. Meaning explanations and concealed oral-cue spelling give different evidence of learning; a visible correct-word bank is not used on independent spelling or writing checks.
Learning focus
Use context rather than sound alone; distinguish six paired meanings; identify and explain a clue; check why an alternative spelling does not fit; retrieve five high-frequency spellings; proofread targeted homophone errors; transfer spelling choices into purposeful original writing.
Classroom use
Five approximately 50-minute lessons with goals, explicit think-alouds, guided/independent practice, formative questions, support/core/extension and error responses. Use orally read texts for access while students still supply their own spellings. The game supports 2–4 players, needs no dice and has a fixed 12-turn-per-player finish rule. Student pages and teacher keys are separate.
Teacher benefits
Three levels of sentence, passage and proofreading practice; original school-life contexts; concealed-word assessment; teacher-ready lesson sequence; complete supplied game pieces; separate evidence for context reasoning, memory spelling and written transfer.
