Students look closely at named artworks and explain how conventions, processes, materials and context combine to communicate meaning. They distinguish observation, source fact and interpretation, then experiment with ordinary materials to plan, create and refine an original artwork.

Hokusai’s The Great Wave, Brian Robinson’s Reef Turtle and Maree Clarke’s On the banks of the Murrumbidgee River provide specific source studies through museum records, teacher-view links and original case prompts. The credited Met Hokusai image is public domain. Contemporary artists’ works are linked rather than reproduced or simulated. Students make original process studies and do not copy cultural motifs or treat an individual artist as everyone in a culture.

The eight core lessons complete essential learning and assessment by lesson 8. Optional lessons 9–10 reinforce translation into another familiar medium and caption writing. All ten lessons have a complete separate editable PPTX, including both optional lessons.

  • Three supporting TXT listing-copy files.

Learning focus

Connect visible choices and verified context to qualified interpretations; compare named works; test material/process combinations; select against an original intention; plan and create; justify refinement; reflect and transfer reasoning to another work or decision.

Classroom use

Approximately 60 minutes per lesson, with flexible discussion and practical studio time. Use the eight-core-lesson route for assessment. Students create on suitable separate art paper/materials and gather a process folio of trials, plans and refinement. The quiz supports understanding and discussion alongside practical evidence.

Access choices include enlarged viewing, word/picture cues, sentence starters, drawing, writing, typing, pointing, oral explanation, a partner recording ideas, or a communication board/device. Keep the same learning criteria across response modes. Extend through justified alternatives, evidence limits and transfer.

Formats and answers

Main Unit Plan: 46 pages, PDF.

Lesson presentations: ten separate editable PPTX files, 100 slides total.

Quiz: one editable PPTX, 24 slides, ten questions.

Answers

ten adjacent red worksheet companions; quiz explanations and game criteria. Open interpretations and personal artworks have sample reasoning, not one fixed correct answer.

Teacher benefits

The separate lesson files support individual lesson delivery. Generous worksheet spaces record thinking while the actual artwork is made on separate materials. Colour case/game resources support discussion; black-and-white practice, assessment and rubric pages support printing. The rubric values connected evidence and purposeful choices across response modes.

Digital product and licence

Digital download; no physical item. PPTX presentations are editable; printable resource pages are supplied in PDF. Internet access is needed for teacher-view museum links. Use in accordance with Sukindi and the purchase platform’s licence terms. Do not redistribute or resell the files. Rights in third-party source artworks and museum pages are separate from the resource-file licence. Contemporary works are linked for viewing; public access or attribution alone does not grant reproduction permission.
