Something Easier

This resource begins at Foundation, our earliest year level.

Something Harder

Explore a related unit from the year above.

Start with a collection, name the required group size, build full groups, count them and check every object. Then contrast this with sharing one to each of a known number of recipients. Students compare the same collection grouped in different ways and explain why the question determines the action.

The unit combines concrete practice, colour displays, worked examples, differentiated print pages, two complete game kits and genuine virtual tasks. Individual assessment records and a four-level rubric focus on the student's own action, quantities and checks. Optional leftover reasoning is available for extension; speed and written fluency are not graded.

What's included

  • 54-page Unit Plan PDF: contents, one teacher quick-start, five complete 45-minute lesson plans and 47 resource pages.
  • 24-slide editable teaching PowerPoint, including three panels with individually movable counters.
  • 22-slide editable quiz PowerPoint: cover, ten question/answer pairs and closing.
  • Three colour displays and two complete worked-model pages.
  • Nine student practice pages across support, core and extension, each immediately followed by its matching red answer page.
  • Pack a Set: an 11-page game kit with rules, group and recipient mats, twelve task cards, answer pages and a two-turn record/key.
  • Same Total, Different Groups: a seven-page game kit with rules, all four paired comparisons, answer pages and a student record/key.
  • Individual physical and virtual assessment records with matching keys, an observation record and a four-level rubric.
  • Separate contents JPEG and a 100-page watermarked Preview PDF showing the complete Unit Plan, teaching deck and quiz.

Learning focus

  • Count each object once and use the final count as the total.
  • Build full groups of a named size and account for every object.
  • Distinguish how many groups from how many in each.
  • Reset one collection and compare two correct groupings.
  • Share among known recipients and check every equal share.
  • Recognise an empty pool and a partial group without inventing or discarding objects.

Classroom use

The screen tasks use the supplied teaching PowerPoint in classroom Edit view. A teacher moves counters at a student's direction, or a student uses a school-approved device. The counters are native individual objects. No additional account or internet is required for these tasks. The printed virtual record accompanies actual screen action; it cannot demonstrate virtual movement by itself.

Use large school-safe counters or blocks and a device that can edit PowerPoint objects. Teacher read-aloud, pointing, drawing, student-directed movement and adult recording are supported. Cutting, handwriting, speech fluency and speed are not attainment measures. Gather individual transfer evidence across taught lessons and additional blocks; the final 25-minute station is not enough to assess a whole class alone.

Teacher benefits

Complete 45-minute lesson plans; ready-to-select differentiated practice; complete game equipment pages; true movable-counter panels; distinct grouping and sharing questions; individual physical and virtual assessment; accessible response choices.
