Make, Check and Explain Data Displays - Year 1
Help students move from sorting choices to explaining a trustworthy display. Start with a full fictional source and a worked example, then guide students to construct rows, columns, object displays or drawings. Each picture represents exactly one recorded response.
Students check every source record and each category, repair a mismatch when needed and explain a valid no-change decision. They compare frequencies, describe ties and count differences, and recognise that a known zero needs a complete relevant source. A group that has not been asked has unknown choices.
Two practical collections provide read-and-check cases and fresh construction tasks, with full source questions, raw choices, category labels and matching keys. Blank own-question pages support a real class investigation without inventing its results. Optional familiar digital tools follow the same one-to-one rule; paper materials provide all core learning.

Learning focus
Match every categorical response once; create a labelled one-to-one display; compare frequencies; explain equal counts, ties and differences; check and justify a repair or no change; distinguish known zero from unknown information; limit a finding to the actual question and group.
Teacher benefits
Complete raw sources support accurate checking. Reusable mats and pieces make construction practical. Immediate matching keys explain source-based reasoning. Fresh formal sources and blank evidence records help preserve independent assessment. Paper and oral alternatives keep access demands separate from statistics learning.
Digital product and licence
Digital teaching resource; no physical product is posted. Requires a PDF reader and PPTX-compatible presentation software. Supply ordinary classroom counters and cutting materials as needed. Use for your own teaching under the Sukindi licence; do not resell or redistribute the files. Do not publish actual student responses in product images.
Classroom use
Five 45-minute lessons for whole-class modelling, guided learning and independent construction. Select manageable cases from the wider bank. Use additional normal maths blocks for further practice, the quiz and formal assessment. Preserve first work and checking traces, and withhold keys until independent evidence is collected.
Access and differentiation
Read source words aloud, offer larger objects, accept pointing or oral explanations, or record the student's exact words and directions. Keep the mathematical decisions with the student. Use another faithful arrangement as a challenge. Do not score reading speed, cutting, drawing neatness or device skill as statistics. Missing or inaccessible evidence remains Not observed—unscored.
Formats, page counts and answers
Unit Plan PDF: 98 pages, including 28 matching answer pages. The page count includes teacher and assessment material, not only student worksheets.
Teaching PowerPoint PPTX: 28 slides, with editable native text.
Quiz PowerPoint PPTX: 22 slides, with editable native questions and reasoned feedback.
Combined Preview PDF: 148 pages in unit-plan, teaching-presentation, quiz order. The contents page is clean; all later pages are marked PREVIEW.
Resource artwork and printable pages are fixed in the PDF. Actual class responses and observations are deliberately blank; fixed-source keys do not predict student performance.
