Make a Reasoned Proposal – Year 5 English Unit
Students use a clearly labelled fictional class survey to make a feasible request for a reading-space trial. They learn that 16 of 28 classmates preferring a shaded verandah is a reason to ask, not proof of school-wide demand. A 14-seat verandah, 12-seat library and unconfirmed approval and supervision make the audience, constraints and respectful response matter.
The five 45–60-minute lessons move from audience and evidence to complex concession/cause sentences, a playable proposal panel, a learner-created native digital survey display and a final delivered proposal. Students answer one listener question and explain a specific change between rehearsal and delivery. Assessment records pitch, tone, pace and volume as distinct communication choices. Role cues, partner rehearsal and accessible communication routes support participation while retaining the reasoning target.

Learning focus
Accurate evidence from a supplied fictional class dataset; a feasible proposal for a defined audience; two meaningful complex sentences; precise vocabulary; respectful listener response; legible learner-created digital survey display; deliberate pitch, tone, pace and volume; one observed rehearsal improvement.
Classroom use
Teach across five lessons of 45–60 minutes. Use the colour display and cards for modelling, the black-and-white planners for guided and independent practice, the panel game for audience response, and the final assessment/rubric to record actual delivery. The PowerPoint quiz supplements but does not replace the observed oral task. The digital chart students create is a learning task; a separate completed student chart deck is not supplied.
