Little Poems, Clever Patterns - Year 1
Little Poems, Clever Patterns helps children discover how the parts of a poem connect. Four original whole poems about rain, a pond, the sky and a garden provide familiar contexts for modelling and practice.
The teaching sequence moves from following poem lines to hearing rhyme, finding returning beginnings and explaining what a pattern joins. Children rebuild a poem, compare a changed line and choose an ending for a pictured scene. They plan, rehearse and check a short poem of their own.
A fresh beach poem supports transfer beyond the practised examples. A poem-performance record and rubric capture pattern, meaning and creation. The lessons include teacher model responses, support, extension and exit checks. Adults may read unfamiliar text or record a child's response; speaking, pointing, drawing, dictation and writing can all show understanding.
