Help Year 6 learners explain how language choices change with familiarity, purpose, setting and a supplied address convention. Learners compare original requests and announcements, quote wording, explain its effect, and adapt a fresh request while keeping all essential facts.
Social distance means the relationship between people, not physical metres. The unit includes counterexamples: familiar friends may use formal wording for a debate, while an unfamiliar visitor may invite conversational questions. It treats slang, colloquial, conversational and formal as useful overlapping descriptions and accepts justified alternatives.
Five sequenced lessons include a combined teacher quick-start, explicit modelling, guided comparison, differentiated support/core/extension work, independent responses and practical feedback. Access options include instructions read aloud, partner rehearsal during practice, larger text, typing and dictated responses while recording the learner's own decisions.
